Dryer Ball Class

Great News.

You have two chances to learn how to make wool dryer balls: Thursday's Mommy Friendly Class on April 14th 2011 at 10am-12 noon or Saturday's Class offered on May 14th from 10 am to 12 noon!

Dryer balls are amazing. There super hand-made wool balls made from roving that can cut in half the time your clothes spend in the dryer. Still not sure what I'm talking about?  I'll let our expert, Pamela Pilon explain.  She has all the nitty gritty as well as photos.

A Chance of A Knit-time

The Wab is looking for test knitters. Here's the scoop...

Test knitters must knit the sample within 4 weeks and leave it in the shop for 2 to 3 months. Afterwards it's all yours, baby.

Currently we have 2 lovely projects in mind:

A lace cowl using the new Mano's lace weight yarn. Very sexy stuff. Great colours.

And a sweater in the Mano's  silk/wool mix. I believe the sweater is called The Nicole. Delish.

Fiberlicious Lunch Time Club

We're starting something new! Hurrah! Thanks to our wonderful customer, Marie-France.

It's a group, or shall we call it a club that meets once a month to learn about a variety of fiber crafts. It's a great way to meet people with similar interests and to brain-storm with a bunch of like-minded fiber fans. The first meeting will be Wednesday April 13th 11:30-1pm. Give us a shout at 613-725-5648 if you'd like to join us. And don't forget to bring your lunch!

March Break Madness

On Wednesday March 16th, we're hosting a March Break workshop for kids ages 6-12. In order to get ready for Spring the theme is all things nature. We'll be making bundles for the birds, needlefelting creatures for CPAWS as well as making needle-felted treasures to take home. THe workshop starts at 10:30 and runs until 3pm. The price is $60.00 Kids should bring a packed lunch and snacks as creative work is hungry work.

Hurrah, It's A New Workshop

Learn how to make felted dryer balls this spring with Pamela Pilon. We're just figuring out the details now. These dryer balls make a huge difference when it comes to caring for cloth diapers and the environment. They can even take the place of fabric softeners. If you haven't heard of these before check out Pamela's site. Don't you just love all the cool stuff you can make.

Tea Leaves Cardigan by Madeleine Tosh.

Kudos to Karen of Wabi Sabi for finishing her first sweater, Tea Leaves cardigan by Madeleine Tosh. Karen said she found the pattern easy to follow. She had only knitted hats and scarves before and she found it easy enough to muddle through. You can learn about the pattern here.

Making Trees At The Wab

This weekend volunteers gathered at the Wab and made trees for our Earth Day window. They had a blast. And Tonia had a great time leading the group as well.

But it's not too late to help out. We still need animals, insects and other groovey creatures to fill the landscape. If you're interested check out these animal patterns. And we have a list of animals we need  on the blog.

Crochet Inspiration, by Sasha Kagan

A lovely book to have for those even slightly interested or for those with years of experience in crochet. British knitwear designer Sasha Kagan supplies plenty of large samples of the crochet work in many weights and colours of yarn along with charted maps of each sample and inspiring projects further along the book. The yarns she chose to work with take great photos and are clearly of quality. I find it exciting and refreshing to have so many different types of yarn and weights featured in one book. A task not easy to do well, but Kagan does execute the book well --an example of her years of experience in design and publishing. Kagan’s work is professional and classy. Recently re-released in paperback, I highly recommend Crochet Inspiration.

For those of you interested in learning how to crochet or to simpley get back into it, Laura will be giving the following class at the Wab.

Crochet for Beginners:

In two two-hour classes, learn to crochet a simple flat lap-top cozy. Learn the Chain Stitch, and Single Crochet Stitch. From these two stitches you will build your own fabric to cover a laptop, mobile phone, or a simple bag. Bring in your item you want to make a cozy for, or it's dimensions (height, depth, and length). Check out our photo above.

The first class we will build the base for your item, there will be homework between classes, and in the last class we will discuss and execute a variety of closures and finishings.

Notes: Yarn, needles, and pattern provided; No Experience necessary.
